Background information for Deepwater and Deepwater Railway Station. |

Dedri Cunninghame allowed us to use this article that we assume
it came
from the Glen Innes Examiner, but we have no date it was published.
Edited by this author, Hendrik. ........................ Titled. Pioneering spirit "alive and well" in Deepwater area. The first known white man to contemplate living at Deepwater was Arthur Wellesley Robertson who inspected the area in 1838. He returned to Sydney well pleased with what he had seen in the north and lodged a claim for land there. On his journey back to Deepwater, Robertson made a slight error in his navigation and traveled a few miles west to the valley he later named "Wellington Vale" Instead of looking further for Deepwater he remained at "Wellington Vale" and took up land there. The following year Archibald Windeyer and William Collins arrived to settle the Deepwater watershed. Naming of the area occurred when a man threw a stone into a deep hole of the river and exclaimed "Hey, thats deep water!" The area's aboriginal name was "Dalgibone," meaning hard, dry earth. Some forty years later in 1880 the railway pushed through to Deepwater. This gave Deepwater a real boost in both population and business. Also in this article. Tin Mining Boom in Area. As tin mining boomed at Emmaville, Stannum and Torrington the Deepwater railhead served these mines as well as the surrounding rural industries. At one stage of its operation in Deepwater railway station laid claim to the fact that it was the busiest and biggest freight centre north of Newcastle. During his hey day the residents of Deepwater enjoyed two daily trains to and from Sydney with one mails train stopping at all stations and the other, the Brisbane Express making its first stop Deepwater. All other stations south of Deepwater were serviced by another train to Glen Innes. The railway which created the town later reversed its policies and caused the closure of the tin smelters by doubling the freight on ingots of tin but not on untreated tin. Wool scouring plants were also closed when the railway began charging per bale on wool when all other commodities were charged per pound. The article came out of some ones scrap book. ................. The Deepwater Railway operated between 1st September 1886 (the day of its opening) until January 1972 (the day of its closure), a period of less than one hundred years. The basic heritage values of
Deepwater Railway Station are well established. In 1993 the place
was entered on the Section 170 Heritage and Conservation Register of
the State Rail Authority. In 1999 the majority of SRA listings were
added to the State Heritage Register following amendment of the
Heritage Act.' For reasons that are unclear
Deepwater Railway Station was not entered onto the State Heritage
Register, although many less significant railway places were. |

The Deepwater Railway Station Committee Income and Expenses for 2006 |
|
| Income. Tenant, $5.00 a week paid to a tenant in the south room. ................... To get rooms in the Deepwater Railway the Deepwater FM 91.1 2cbd promised to pay rent (See next page, further down page link ) Then refused to pay rent. 3 rooms Deepwater FM 91.1 , no rent. Before Deepwater FM 91.1 took over the 3 rooms income was received through rent from organizations such as, Lead Light, Craft work, Pottery, Tafe. Normally the Deepwater Railway Committee had at least a few thousand in the bank to manage and develop their site. Unfortunately the Committee has been robbed of needed income. Income yearly Approx $240.00 |
Expenses. 1/ During mowing 4 months. $15.00 each mow. $50.00 a month. At least $200.00 a season. Planning 2/ History Garden labour. Best Employment subsidy. 75% subsidy so 25% Deepwater Railway to pay. 8 hours in the garden at $15.00 an hour. Deepwater Railway to pay $40.00 a week over 7 months. Total expense approx $1400.00. 3/ Tables in the garden for people to sit. About 4 tables at $300.00 each. Total $1200.00. Needed this financial year $2800.00. Expenses and needed to develop the site $2800.00 |
| Recommendation
regarding rent: If that the FM group pay $5.00 a week for each room. Similar to the tenant that pays for a small room on the South of the building. 3 rooms = $15.00 |
Therefore, the
Deepwater Railway Committee with have another $780.00 which is still
an insignificant amount ,but will help to reduce the gap so the site
can be developed. |
We will now discuss the fateful
decision that the Deepwater Railway Committee made in allowing (In 1997)
the Deepwater FM 91.1 to move into the Deepwater Railway Station.
Little did the
Deepwater Railway Committee realize what was to happen in the future.
They did not
realize, once
in the building they (Deepwater FM 91.1) were not going to pay rent (Robbing the Deepwater
Railway Committee needed income to look after their site.).
On two occasions
they tried to take over the Deepwater Railway Station building and remove
the Deepwater Railway Committee from managing the site.

A note below, by Donald
Ellsmore. |
|
..................... Also the Deepwater FM
91.1 once in the building refused to even recognise that Deepwater
Railway Committee as a 355 Committee in the Council and managing the
Deepwater Railway site and building. It is now June 2006 (FM moved in 1997)now let us have a look at what the Deepwater FM 91.1 Committee has done to this precious Asset in our Deepwater Community (Deepwater Railway Station). Scroll down |
...................................................
Note this point.
Severn Shire Council entered into a lease with the SRA and
established a Deepwater Historical Railway Station Management Committee
(under s.355 of the Local Government Act) to manage the place.
Previously quoted at the top of this page.
Deepwater FM 91.1 decided they were going to run the Station and
completely ignore the 355 Committee that the Council put in place.
The result has been..........Keep rolling down the page and then the next
page.
...........................................................
Deepwater FM 91.1 clearly do not understand and appreciate the
significance of the Deepwater Railway Station site or the Deepwater Railway Station
building.
..............................
The importance of the Deepwater Railway Station is shown by information above
.................................
For that reason, as you read what I have posted, if you disagree with what has happened, send me an
Email and show me the mistake and
the record can be rectified.

( The Glen Innes Group is not party to what has happened in the past, but
they do have the responsibility to bring to educate/help/guide the group who injured the
FM reputation in Deepwater).
